Main Bus Transportation Companies in Singapore
Singapore Bus Service (SBS)
DelGro Corporation Limited, started out in November 1973 as
a bus company, known as Singapore Bus Service (1978) Limited (SBS),
when three bus companies - Amalgamated Bus Company, Associated Bus
Services and United Bus Company - merged to meet the growing need
for a reliable and efficient public bus service in Singapore. In
1974, the Goverment sent a team of officials to revamp the entire
bus system to provide a safe, efficient, reliable, comfortable and
affordable bus service. In 1978, SBS went public. Its 20 million
shares were over-subscribed 27 times, a reflection of public confidence
in a progressive and well run company.
TIBS Holdings Ltd together with Singapore MRT Ltd pioneered
the Bus-Plus services in 1994, giving Singaporeans a new and luxurious
way of travelling. The bus-plus scheme was conceptualised by the
Singapore government as an exclusive and upmarket transport service
to fill the gap between the bus/MRT service and the taxis/private
cars. The joint-venture company, Bus-Plus Services Pte Ltd was registered
on 18 May 1994. Bus-Plus, the new "business class" public transport
service, commenced operations on 16 August 1994 with two scheduled
services, Service 1 (from Bayshore Park to Shenton Way) and Service
2 (from Faber Hills to Clementi MRT station). With an initial fleet
of 20 luxurious air-conditioned minibuses that can carry 14 people,
Bus-Plus operates six scheduled services during peak hours. Besides
scheduled services, Bus-Plus also operates a chartered service.
