Singapore SMRT
SMRT
Limited was incorporated on 6th August 1987, under license from
the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRTC), the owner and builder
of the system, to operate the MRT system for an initial period of
10 years. The SMRT system is an electrically driven railway system.
Construction of the $5 billion system began in October 1983, after
more than ten years of extensive studies on the nation's transportation
needs. In November 1987, the first section of the system entered
passenger service, thereafter the remainder of the system was opened
in stages and the final section was completed in July 1990. Construction
on the first extension of the MRT system began in early 1990. Named
the Woodlands Extension, it links the system from Yishun station
to Choa Chu Kang station. The extension has been operational since
1996.
